Sometimes you require service for shipments which do not fill a whole truckload. There are specialized carriers who provide service exclusively for this type of shipment, when you don't need the entire truck. Less-Than-Truckload or LTL trucking providers use the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) to determine the class of commodities that is being shipped. The NMFC determines "Class" using a shipment or commodity's weight, density, value, stow ability and ease of handling. As an example, a 10,000 pound shipment of ball bearings will take up a smaller portion of the truck than 10,000 pounds of ping pong balls. Typically, denser freight would have a lower class than fluff freight.
